The sound if very artificial and generic. West's vocals are also in fine form. Probably my favourite track of the album. For any Leslie West fan this album is a buy. This offering is loaded with the blues ala Uncle Lesle. This story is interlaced with some tasty guitar licks.
Leslie shines with crunching, biting tone enveloping his tasteful riffs. Although it's not his classic Les Paul Jr. But it's clear that West is the perfect man for the job. Leslie West has been one of my favorite Rock and Roll Guitar players for years. Leslie pumps out some of his best guitar playing in years.
I Got The Blues 11. The great Leslie West knocking off 11 blues standards like only he can. As a listener you can't tell what type of guitar rig or amp they're using. Too bad it's being produced at the hands of Mike Varney. The Doors' Crawling Kingsnake takes on a completely different feel with Leslie's guitar taking center stage.
Hellhound On My Trail 8. Not exactly a novel idea for Mike Varney's Blues Bureau International label Rick Derringer and Pat Travers have done pretty much the same , and the concept might be wearing a bit thin by now. King, Muddy Waters and the like. As for the arrangements of the songs, West rarely strays very far from the classic versions, as if he's afraid of damaging their legacy in some way. Why I Sing The Blues Musicians Leslie West: Rhythm, Lead and Slide Guitars and Vocals Aynsley Dunbar: Drums Gunter Nezhoda: Bass Kevin Curry: Rhythm Guitar. Leslie West may be only half the man he used to be in size, that is , his voice and guitar skills haven't suffered at all.
What a novel idea here. One of the better tracks on the album. Don't Start Me Talkin' 7. . Down By The River 10.
The saving grace in this record is West's guitar. I have to concur-Turn it up and rock out! His band on this is smooth and unubtrusive and a real enjojment to listen to as they grind out the backing melodies. I wouldn't have minded some more variation, though some more slow blues tunes would have been nice. Speakers work by causing vibrations and moving air in real space, there's no sense of any of those physical principals at work here. But there's no denying that West's raspy vocals and soulful guitar playing do these classics justice.
Born Under A Bad Sign 9. I have always felt that he is at his best when playing the blues. I wish he would take this group on the road and hang up the tired Mountain nostalgia act for awhile. Talk To Your Daughter 6. . . .
