Man on Fire is a solidly entertaining movie and I have yet to see Denzel Washington give a less than stellar performance in any of his screen roles. The film earns its title in the second half, not because of non-stop action - which it fore-goes in order to give us something more pondered and cruel - but because Creasy is literally ablaze with silent fury. Kalfus and Samuel Ramos's father were best friends, and therefore Kalfus has a close relationship with Samuel. It just has lots of atmosphere. When Creasy wakes in the veterinary hospital, and learns from Rayburn about Pita's apparent death, he leaves to start his own investigation. Denzel Washington projects the bleak despair he's revealed before, and his character arc involves us.
All of this is true, and yet the movie has real qualities. He distances himself from Pita, but soon begins to bond with the kind and astute girl and subsequently starts working to control his drinking, having found renewed purpose in life. Like the source material, that movie was set in Italy. I thought the film's weakest moment was in between. It depends on how good he is at it. When he confronts the Ramoses, Samuel confesses that he agreed to Kalfus' plan to work with The Voice to stage Pita's kidnapping.

It takes far too long between the kidnapping and Creasy starting to kill those responsible. It is definitely not for the squeamish or for members of the Mexico City Tourism Board.
