It is even a more fantastic job when you consider that the film many people don't realize this is chiefly a Spanish production. The production design by Benjamin Fernandez and specially the cinematography by Javier Aguirresarobe are extraordinary. By the time it comes to a boil, the characters, including a portly minister Thomas Thieme who embodies the socialist mentality, are embroiled in an unforgettable tragedy—it had to be, given its subject—about what happens to the human spirit when it is shackled and chained. Henckel von Donnersmarck, recreating communist East Germany on the eve of its collapse, uses a tense political thriller as his framework. The screenplay is one of the best of this genre I have seen in the last few years, very carefully revised and misleading, yet at the end everything makes perfect sense, not the mention on the second time you watch it.

Was she good or bad? The two kids in this film were also fantastic. This is a film that will not be forgotten. Nicole Kidman is perfectly cast in The Others. There is no equivocation of evil in The Lives of Others; there are only men and women whose lives are moved by ideas in a revolving intellectual mystery, powered by an unconquerable love for life. I was in awe of the ending, a fairly intelligent premise. Sober and discreet when needed, yet grand all the same. An interview with the director is illuminating, as he discusses—fluently in English—analog versus digital filmmaking, the power of music and his philosophy of art, which he describes as evoking feelings over expressing principles, causing one to wonder whether he realizes he accomplishes both.

It's tense, scary, and very memorable -- I don't think I'll ever forget the image of a terrified Nicole Kidman clutching her rosary beads around her shotgun as she tears down the halls of her dreadful Victorian mansion. The came Abre los ojos, a very powerful second film that immediately put him aside some of the leading directors there, like Pedro Almodovar, Carlos Saura, or Fernando Trueba. The acting is great, the plot actually scares you and the directing is solid. The Others is the first intelligent horror film in years, completely relying on atmosphere and eerie set pieces. Plus the mansion is also a creepy place.
Just as in the best painting of figures like Goya or Rembrandt, light and shadow reveal the objects and the people. Wiesler is a weasel, spying on others, reducing them to terrified, quivering flesh. Are you annoyed by all the typos? Making of The Lives of Others, 19 minutes presented in German, includes subtitled interviews with cast members Sebastian Koch, Martina Gedeck and the late Ulrich Muhe. To let me know your thoughts, please feel free to me. It worked well, and I was speechless after the film. The first half, or even three quarters, seemed to move along a bit slowly, but it felt necessary to build the suspense to the point where I was biting my nails in anticipation of the inevitable.
All I can say is I am still dumbfounded by her extraordinary performance. With the arrival of 3 servants, strange events star to occur in the old house and the daughter spots 'intruders' everywhere. Not to mention, that in the film everyone who enters the house, must close the previous door, before opening the next. For this our app includes a direct submission of feature requests. But unlike the Holocaust tragic comedy, Life is Beautiful, the Hitler-as-a-slice-of-life Downfall, the morally repugnant Munich or any other variety of movies that trivialize evil, this story calculates a logical culmination of life under dictatorship. The Others is a total winner and easily one of the greatest genre-films of the last few decades. It takes you on a slow, and uncomfortable ride.

I have always loved ghost stories, and this film has easily become my favorite ghost story ever. App Description The only subtitle solution you will ever need. It's creepy, simplistic, and eerie.
The music is creepy, and really adds to the feel of a 50's ghost story. It is the irresistable Christa, who moves with grace, with whom the low-ranking Wiesler falls in love at first sight. Commentary tracks are often a chore and this one contains the usual list of thank-you notes, but it is instructive. It makes the film completely opposite than other ghost stories, with Grace not afraid of the dark, and making sure to keep the light out, to save her children.
